Malaysian medical doctors who plan to practice Aesthetic Medicine are required to undergo a stringent checklist outlined by the Malaysian Ministry of Health.
Since the practice of Aesthetic Medicine is not regarded as a speciality, the Ministry of Health has issued a “special license” in the form of a Letter of Credentialing & Privileging (LCP), which says that the holder of this Letter is credentialed and privileged to practice Aesthetic Medicine. Therefore, a medical doctor must have his / her Letter of Credentialing and Privileging (LCP) to practice Aesthetic Medicine.
Who monitors the LCP process?
A division was set up under “Amalan Perubatan” by The Ministry of Health (Malaysia) to monitor this, and they created guidelines to regulate the practice of Aesthetic Medicine in Malaysia by evaluating the Doctors via an exam. The Guideline on Aesthetic Medical Practice, which explains the requirements to practice Aesthetic Medicine in Malaysia comes under the purview of the Main Credentialing and Privileging Committee of Aesthetic Medical Practice.
The importance of obtaining an LCP Certification
Medical Doctors in Malaysia who want to practice Aesthetic Medicine should fulfil certain prerequisites, apply for the exam, and of course be successful in it. Once they pass the exam, they will have their name enlisted in a special register, called the Registry for General Practitioners practicing Aesthetic Medicine. The Ministry of Health (Malaysia) has outlined the guidelines for practicing Aesthetic Medicine in Malaysia to regulate the practice. Doctors who are practicing Aesthetic Medicine without their LCP are actually in misconduct. Similarly, doctors with LCP who “rent” their LCP for a fee to other Doctors, in somewhat to “legitimize” their Aesthetic practice, are also equally in misconduct.
Applying for the LCP Exam
The National Registry of Registered Medical Practitioners Practicing Aesthetic Medical Practice has three chapters, with the LCP being awarded according to their discipline:
Chapter 1: Registry for General Practitioners Practicing Aesthetic Medical Practice
Chapter 2: Registry for Medical Specialists Practicing Aesthetic Medical Practice
Chapter 3: Registry for Surgical Specialists Practicing Aesthetic Medical Practice
Each Chapter has its own set of procedures and is governed by its own committee or society.The process starts with the submission of a duly completed LCP application form along with the relevant attachments to the Secretariat for LCP Committee (Chapter I). The Secretariat for Chapter 1 shall verify and compile the related documents and will then forward the related documents to the Main Credentialing and Privileging Committee of Aesthetic Medical Practice through the Medical Practice Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia. Upon vetting the entry requirements, successful Doctors will be called for the exam by the Medical Practice Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia, based on a queued waiting list.
